Question
my Bichon puppy is only alone in her crate for 4 hours in the morning, I come home for lunch for an hour, take her for a 1/2 hour walk, then the the family is home 4 hours later, and we are then home for the evening with her. Is this schedule reasonable to keep her from developing bad behavior problems - she is well loved and cared for.

Answer
I will be very honest here and I know its not what you want to hear. 8 hours in a crate with only 1/2 hour walk between is too long and yes I foresee some mental health issues developing for the future.

I would have chosen a different breed that does not demand so much human attention, nevertheless you have this one now so I do suggest that you either get a family member or neighbour to come in and walk her for 2 hours or place her in daycare in the morning until lunch then she can go home and be crated until you come home. Some pet insurance schemes will actually assist with this. Daycare in your case would be advisable to ensure she is being stimulated whilst receiving human bonding, a necessity for this breed.
