Bichon Frise - 10 yr. old bichon frise biting

Expert: Kaza - 8/24/2009

Question
My 10 yr. old bichon, Mia, bit a 5 yr. old last year when cornered. We have since kept her in her kennel when we have company. Today, she was chewing on a rubber "sock sorter". I told her no and calmly reached down to pick it up. She has nipped at my husband and sons many times, but rarely me. She actually bit my index finger, drawing blood. Is there anything we can do to stop this behavior or is it old age? She just had her yearly checkup a month ago and all looked well. Thank you.

Answer
There are a number of reasons why she ahs reacted in this way, I would take her to the vet and ask him to give her a full opthalmic check up and also a blood panel to seee if she has everything working, the trouble with this breed is that not every care has been taken with the gene pool, as such some dogs devlop eye disorders making it hard for them to distinguish what is approaching them.

Good luck with her and keep me posted on how she is.
Thanks
