Question
have 5 yr. old male bichon that has developed cateracts.  i feel asthough some thing systemic is going on.  last wk got meds for conjunctivitus.  his eye cleared but hes bumbing into things.  going to vet today and was wondering what blood work should be drawn so that i can start eliminating conditions.

Answer
The vet will be checking for a variety of illness, ranging from Liver disease to epilepsy .
Start giving the dogs higher protein based foods and daily supplements of lutein 20mg to start with for 6 weeks then down to 6mg daily for life, this helps reduce the cataract if caught early. TRy getting eyebright supplement with the lutein, if you are in UK Holland and Barratt sell it.

If on a dry diet try introducing fresher foods as these dogs fair far better on a good balanced natural diet rather than any commercial foods especially dry foods.
