Hello, I have an eleven year old bichon frise female, she has recently had a lump come up- on her one of her mamery glands. She also has just been diagnosed with anterior cruciate ligament rupture. The problem with this however is that she is not walking at all she is also off her food, despite having painkillers. I am concerned that it may be another problem as to me it feels like her hip is out of alignement at the top of her leg. When this first happened a couple of weeks ago she was hopping on two legs now is not walking at all. I would really appreciate any advice yu have.

firstly it is best to undertake xrays to clear any hip dysplasia which may be the reason her cruciate has ruptured. I would advise having the lump excised to ensure there is no malignancy present. In the meantime you can start her on a some glucosamine and chondratin tablets and high doses of fish oils for her age related problems.These should be bought through your local human health store as they tend to be higher doses which is exactly what she needs, many per based vitamins and minerals are far too small to have any significant effect.

I would also just as a precaution start her on milk thistle which will assist her liver in case she requires some drug therapy from the vet.
I would also suggest hydrotherapy once per week which will build up the muscles to aid any hind leg problems, but keep her crated and free from exercise throughout the day.

There are natural herbs etc that can be given but like with chemotherapy (drug) therapy there are some side effects that you would need to consider.

Devils claw is good but can cause some issues if ulcers are present or a heart condition exists.You can also try bromelian, willow bark and yucca , all have anti inflammatory properties.

Massage helps and also will offer her warmth through touch, also placing her in a heated towel helps, and placing a hot water bottle in her bed at night. Also try acupuncture it is an excellent tool for pain in dogs.
