QuestionQUESTION: I asked this question on the all experts site and got this reply....could I please have your opinion on the subject and please know that I take very good care of my dogs....that is why I want to know what is best for them.
Question I have a 1 and a half year old neutered boy that is half cocker spaniel and half bichon frise and an 8 mth old spayed little girl that is a bichon. I have been researching different diets and commercial food. I have used Chicken Soup for the Puppy and Dog Lovers Soul and am now using Pinnacle which claims to be allergy free. I am feeding half of the daily recommended amt and supplimenting with cooked chicken and some brown rice and vegetables. I give baby carrots and apples for treats and I also feed some spinach as well. I also give them brewers yeast with garlic. I am wanting to know if I am on the right track as far as their diet is concerned? The vet says they are both at healthy weights. Thanks!

ANSWER: I think it is appalling for anyone to speak with you in this manner.
Your diet sounds fine , Yes it is fine to feed half and half , many dried foods should not be given alone to bichon's due to their inherent susceptibility to stones.
Be careful with the use of garlic, I like that you use spinach , this is known to reduce cataracts.
Have you tried giving raw foods too, they help to reduce tear stains.
Try also pork, its better than chicken dietrary wise.
I think you are doing a very good job.
Try to also give a good 60% meat content natural wet dog food on one day per week, this just ensures that they receive all their requirements.

QUESTION: Would it be better to switch to canned food and then suppliment that with the homemade food? Thank you for your kindness.
AnswerYour supplement is fine, just keep it wet, ie fresh vegetables, fresh cuts of meat etc,
If you look on our site we have an exact calorie sheet to advise on how much your dog needs daily.
a good pouch food is available from bravo foods in US and prizechoice in UK.
Only resort to the canned if you are unable to give a good balance of fresh foods that you presently use.
