Bichon Frise/A barking Bichon

Question
We have had our Bichon for a little over one year.  He is a really good boy, but has started to develop a barking issue.  Unfortunately we didn't do enough research on the breed when we got him and were not aware that they do not make good "home alone dogs."  We allow him free reign of the house both during the day and at night.  When we are home, he gets alot of attention.  My concern is this; he barks at everything...and I mean EVERYTHING.  I think he is announcing his presence, but I don't want it to become hostile.  How can I "nip this in the bud?"

Answer
Yes they do not do well home alone.  There is no way to stop the barking.  I would not use this on my dogs but there are electic shock collars. When he bark he gets a shock.  There is also de-barking.  They now use lasers to de-bark.  There are vets that specialize in this procedure.
