Bichon Frise - nipping your heals

Expert: Kaza - 3/7/2007

Question
how can i get my 8 month old bischon to stop nipping at my heals?

Answer
Hello
this is I am afraid all part of bichon puppy socialistaion and is very common,
here are some tips:

As all puppies grow, they explore their world. Their exploration is accomplished by their mouth and their nose. They have to sample “everything” including each other. If you have ever watched a litter of puppies, you will have noticed that they are constantly biting at each other or their mum. Biting is their way of communicating. When one puppy gets bit to hard, he yelps sharply and withdraws to lick his wound.  The biter backs off understanding that play-time got a bit rough. Once the discomfort and fear goes away, the bitten puppy is right back in the middle of play.

You need to start correct training NOW, dont pull doggy along with him grippint at the trouser leg, STOP stand still, remove pup from your leg and crate him up for a few seconds, each time he pulls, nips etc, they are real quick to learn that its not worth the trouble.
If they bite YELP out high pitched voice, it stops them in their tracks, just like mum would.
