Bicycle Repair/Gearing question

Question
Hello, I have a 91 Cannondale Tendem with 7 speed SunTour components. The bar end shifters need to be replaced and I am a little confused on which way to go. I have found some exact replacements online, but am concerned about replacing other drivetrain parts as needed. They may be hard to find...and expensive. Will Shimano 7 speed bar end shifters work with the SunTour drivetrain? Any recommendations regarding changing to 8 or 9 speed?  Would I have to replace the back wheel along with the casette, chain, and rear derailer? How about the front derailer?
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Allan. Drive train parts have to match to an extent. I know that derailleurs and shifters usually have to be the same company unless they are compatible with each other (off the top of my head, I think Sram and SunTour are Shimano compatible). Most bicycles will come with a Shimano derailleur anyway.

Changing to an 8 or 9 speed is tricky stuff. You will have to buy new wheels, cassettes, rear derailleur, and possibly new cables. On top of all of that, the new wheel may be too large to fit between the rear chain/seat stays.

If there is anything else I can help you with to get you on the road happy with you bike let me know.

Expertise

I can answer questions on all issues you may have encountered with your bicycle. Some things are hard to explain without visually seeing or riding the bicycle such as vague 'clanking' noises.

Experience

I was my neighborhood mechanic as an early teenager. I have also worked in a bicycle repair shop for about a year and a half.
