Hello,
I have a problem with my Raleigh SC 40 handlebar mounted "twist" shifter separating, and now it half of it just spins around and 'round, and won't engage the front deraileur, only fall back into the low gear.

Hello Dave. It sounds to be that your shifter is broken. Grip shifters are pretty cheaply made, so they can end up breaking easily. Grip shifter aren't too expensive either.

I can't give you a honest answer without actually seeing the shifter. However, if your shifter is in two pieces then it is probably broken. If I can further help you with your shifter and getting you riding your bike again please feel free to ask.
