Bicycle Repair - Roadmaster mountain sport sx

Expert: Steve Mills - 8/28/2008

Question
Hi I have a roadmaster mountain sport sx and i was riding and the back bolt came loose and the whole gear thing in the back came off and now the chain is off too. Would you be able to help me get my bike back in order? Also I included pictures for further reference.

Answer
You will need to replace the bolt and nut on the derailleur hanger. This can be purchased from your local bike shop and is fairly inexpensive. When you reinstall the derailleur back onto the bike, you will need to tighten the axle nut to where the derailleur will not come off if this were to happen again. The derailleur is the device used to move the chain up and down the group of sprockets on the rear wheel.  If you have any further questions, please ask.
