Bicycle Repair/add sprocket to Biopace 600

Question
Hi Dave,
My bike currently has a 6 speed Shimano Biopace 600. Can I add another sprocket (currently have two - 52 & 42) to my chainring to ease my pedaling on longer, steeper climbs? All the components are in good working condition. If this is not a viable option have you any suggestions?
Thank You.
Regards,
Robert

Answer
Hello Robert. You cannot add additional chain rings to a double. Also the Biopace is an oval shaped crank set, where as others are round. You would also have to change derailleurs in the front for a triple chain ring.

For triple chain rings you will ultimately have to replace your front derailleur and shifters. The crank set however, will not vary in quality as much as will the weight. Quality does increase but not as much of a rate. It sounds like you have downtube shifters and you can find those at any bike shop. The derailleur has to be triple chain ring compatible.

I hope this has helped you out. If you have any more questions about the chain rings, shifters, or derailleurs, I will certainly be glad to help.

I can answer questions on all issues you may have encountered with your bicycle. Some things are hard to explain without visually seeing or riding the bicycle such as vague 'clanking' noises.

I was my neighborhood mechanic as an early teenager. I have also worked in a bicycle repair shop for about a year and a half.
