Wow! An answer from Sheldon Brown. He was a true guru of the bicycle world and his website survives him. Check it out. In spite of all that, I must respectfully offer a different opinion on coaster brakes. I live on the beach in Florida and coaster brake single speeds are very popular here ("Beach Cruisers"). It's flat and the weather kills exposed metal. I fix bicycles for a charity and I am always delighted to get a beach cruiser because typically they are very easy to fix. They last forever. Everyone here should ride a single speed or maybe a 3-speed coaster brake bike. It's OK to have a Lightspeed/Campagnolo racer as well, but take your beach cruiser to the beach.
