QUESTION: How many variables are there in an experiment with wet soil, dry soil, and
light?

Answer
It seems that you have two studies here.  What is the hypothesis?  Are you studying plant growth or the effect of light on soil moisture. If plants are involved Soil moisture and light would be independent variables. Contols would also be needed.  Your results would be thye dependent variable.
