Question
I am trying to research mold growth when feeding big bales to horses outside on the ground(which horse people for some reason aren't concerned with). At what temperature and time length will these molds start to grow(with or without being rained on)?Thank you for any help! Sandy Markiewicz

Answer
Hi Sandy:  Thanks for your question.  This is somewhat outside my expertise, but let me say that mold generally grows in warm humid conditions (as I'm sure you know!).

Here are a couple of websites I found.  You can search "hay mold growth" which is what I did:

http://www.uwex.edu/ces/forage/wfc/proceedings2001/mold_growth_in_hay.htm

http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/cropsystems/DC7404.html

Hope this helps!
