Question
I found a thin maggot-like worm embedded in a chicken breast at a local eatery...what kind of creature would it be?

Answer
Dear Lino,

Without seeing it in person, I can't make a positive identification.  It's *possible* it was a maggot, but there would not likely be only one.

If the worm was long and thin, tapered at both ends and without an obvious head or tail, it could have been a nematode (roundworm) parasite that the chicken contracted while it was growing.  I've seen these in fish fillets at the supermarket (especially snapper!), but never seen it in a chicken.

I would be better able to ID the worm if you have a picture.  If so, please write back (privately) and I can give you an email address where you can send it.

Hope that helps.
