Question

Staining from Galls
Hello Dana, I hope you can help me, I noticed you have answerd questions on galls before and I have found your answers very informative.

We have a tree at the back of our garden which is dropping these at a rate of knots, while we were away on holiday we were unable to be continually sweeping them of our patio and on our return have found that due to the wet weather they have stained our newly landcaped garden. (see attached Pictures)

Do you know what kind of substance the galls excreate?, so I can get something to clean it off?

Hope you can help

Regards
Michelle

Answer
Dear Michelle,

The stains on your walks are not being caused by anything the galls themselves, secrete, but rather by the tannins in the plant tissues that have been damaged by the galls, and are oozing.

Tannins are *very* hard to remove, and they make very stubborn stains.  I found a couple of sites with some helpful tips for removing tannin stains from concrete.

Hope that helps you get the walkways nice and clean again!

Take care,
Dana
