Question
I am one of those poor souls who will remark "I used to want to be a biologist, or marine biologist when I was a kid..." The only difference is that I STILL would like to see that happen. I am discouraged however, in that I am already 28 years old with only a little community college under my belt, and math skills that need some vast improvements. This question is a little vague I guess, but I was wondering if you had any advice or anecdotes on the subject, where to start and what not. Oceanography and Marine Science is what appeals to me the most, but my general passion for the living world is very broad. Any help would be appreciated, thanks so much!

Answer
Dear Eric,

At the age of 28 you're certainly not old, and it's never too late to get a degree that will help you reach your goal.  (How old will you be in four years if you *don't*?)

If your math skills are not strong, then you could seek a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology or Marine Science, either of which requires far less math (including less Physics and Chemistry) and more cross-disciplinary work in the humanities and other arts.  This could prepare you for a variety of careers or graduate work, from environmental science (working with the Nature Conservancy or other conservation group), environmental law, teaching in the sciences, serving as a ranger in a National Park or Forest...the list goes on!

Even before you get the degree, you can seek a position with a conservation organization such as the Nature Conservancy.  There are field work positions that don't require more than a bachelor's degree, or perhaps even less than that.  All you can do is inquire and find out:

Hope that helps give you a few things to consider.  Good luck!
