Question

silure/grenouille
I would like to know what animal is this? I took the picture in november in Burkina Faso. It looks like a silure and a frog. The animal was about 7 cm long.

Answer
Dear Koen,

This animal is a tadpole, the aquatic larva of a frog, that is very close to metamorphosing into its terrestrial form, and adult frog.

Before this happens, the body shape will change a bit more (the head will become more narrow at the tip), and the tail will resorb into the body.  At the same time, lungs will develop, the gills will resorb, and the animal will be able to live on both land and in the water, as an adult amphibian does.

Hope that helps.
