Hey Mai,

I'm not providing an answer here because Dr. Dana has already sufficiently done so and I know nothing anyway, but I hope this will be posted. haha.

That's very cool to hear about your family and very interesting to hear Dr. Dana's response.  I'm actually working on a research project right now about this topic and I wonder if it would be possible to get in touch with you, Mai, somehow...

I don't think I can post my email on here because of the filters implemented on here, but you can find my contact detail under "about me" on the right on my old blog: http://the-japan-junkie.blogspot.com/

I don't update on there anymore, but I do use the email.  I hope you read this and hopefully we can talk!

Best,

Hmong Girl

Most likely Hmong people with naturally blond or red hair may have a distant relative who is Caucasian.  The French and Americans and other Europeans have been in IndoChina for nearly 100 years. So intermarriage with a French priest, merchant, or soldier could explain the red or blond hair.

The gene could come from an grandfather, great grandfather, or great great grandfather.

I once saw a tv program about Mongolian tribespeople. And sometimes a Mongol would have blond hair and blue eyes.

They did a genetic test of one girl and concluded she had Russian blood.  So I believe red or blond hair in a southeast Asian indicates intermarriage somewhere down the line with a Caucasian ancestor.
