Biology - sodium chloride

Expert: Walter Hintz - 10/20/2009

Question
Salt is made up (I read) of 40% sodium and 60% chlorine, making a compound sodium chloride.  So with regard to limiting salt intake for health, if something says it contains 400 mg of sodium, do they mean it has 400 mg of sodium chloride (salt) or do they mean it has 400 mg of sodium and, therefore, 600 mg of chlorine?

This is driving me nuts. I can't find an answer anywhere.

Thanks for listening.

Answer
Nutritional information on a package lists ingrediants by weight of a serving I nave a jar of shagetti sauce containing 250 milligrams of sodium and the serving size is i/2 cup or 4 ounces which is 28 grams. Therefore 1/2 cup of this sauce would contain 750mg of chloride (chlorine ions)
