Question
My Bio lab instructor said that peptoglycan is made of murien and 2 disaccharides. The queston I have is what is murien?

Answer
Hi Jason:  Thanks for your question.

Peptidoglycan is the outer layer of bacteria.  It is composed of sugars and proteins lined up in a lattice.  The sugars are N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acid.  The amino acids can be alanine, glycine and/or glutamine.

I think you misheard your lab instructor.  Peptidoglycan and murein are the same thing.

Hope this helps.
