Biology - skin and hair color!

Expert: Florence M Rollwagen - 6/30/2009

Question
can the environment affect the baby traits, like hair and skin color. as there is a fair blonde couple that got a dark skin baby! and the opposite brunette couple that got a very blonde baby.
is there the possibility of changing an eye color by lasik or any kind of procedure?
thanks and regards

Answer
Hi Samia:  Thanks for your question.

Inheritance of skin, hair and eye color are polygenic.  That means that several genes contribute to the color.  So it is perfectly possible for a light couple to have a darker baby and vice versa.

Here's a link that explains this effect:

Yes, it is possible to change the color of your eyes permanently.  Eye color is part of the iris.  Sometimes people use colored contact lenses to change eye color temporarily, but a procedure called "ColorIris" is available for permanent change.  Here's a link:

Personally, I wouldn't let anyone operate on my eyes for pure cosmetic effect.  What if something went wrong?  I think it's too dangerous right now.

My opinion, of course.

Hope this helps.  Write back if you have more questions.
