Biology/Query re fish

Question
I read somewhere that great whites have to live in cold, temperate waters in order to be able to feed on enough fish.
So why are fish more abundant in colder waters?

Logically, I would have assumed that, like with land mammals, there would be a higher population-density of wildlife in the hotter areas on Earth(ie around the Equator) for obvious reasons.

Answer
Hi Goeff
I have snorkeled in both warm and cold water and I do not see more fish in cold water and I do not know that Great white sharks must live in cold water. As a matter of fact they are found in temperate waters and visit colder waters only occasionally
