Biology/White streaks in hair and skin

Question
Hi, I saw that in 2008 a lady asked a question about a pale blonde spot on her sons head. Well, I have something similar. My right eyebrow, eyelashes and I just noticed in front of my ear, is turning white. It just started happening a few months ago. Though the ear one my boyfriend just noticed. I was wondering what caused it. I have no problem with the white hair, it's just people notice and when they ask why, I would like to give them something better than a shrug and complete confusion.

Thanks,
Melissa.

Answer
Dear Melissa,

The late acquisition of unpigmented spots on the skin you describe is consistent with a condition known as vitiligo:

This would have to be diagnosed by your physician to be sure.  But that is what it sounds like from here, where I can't see it in person.  Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder of unknown cause.  Since vitiligo can be associated with other, less benign, autoimmune diseases, I would strongly suggest that you do see a physician about this as soon as possible.

I hope all will be well.

Take care,

Dana
