Biology/Bioethics- Gene Therapy
Expert: Walter Hintz - 4/29/2011
QuestionDear Professor Hintz,
I am currently a high school student conducting a research project on the topic of gene therapy. I would be very very appreciative if you could answer some questions for me. First off, how long do you think it will be before gene therapy is widely used in the medical field, if ever? How much money and time would the government and scientists/doctors need to spend to conduct trials and research before this procedure can actually be used regularly and effectively? Also, there is some controversy revolving around this topic because of the risk involved, issues with money, and even simply distinguishing the "good" and "bad" uses of genetic modification techniques that could lead to abuse of the technology. What is your opinion on all this? Would you consider yourself for or against gene therapy? Thank you so much for taking the time to read and answer my questions!
Sincerely,
Joshua Quach
AnswerHi Josh
My guess is that it will be used to treat diseases in the next year or so.
AS to the cost I am afraid that I do not know but it will be considerable
There is always the possibility that someone will use the technology for personal gain but otherwise I cannot understand why anybody can object to the possibility of treating children for inborn diseases like cystic fibrosis
I am absolutely in favor of this technology
