Here is what I would do John. The problem might be
How does the amount of fertilizer effect the growth rate of corn
Hypothesis
   Too much or too little fertilizer will effect the growth rate of corn
Experimental design
Prepare three different concentrations of fertilizer in solution
Prepare four different pots and plant the corn
When it sprouts water with each concentration The forth pot gets no fertilizer
  Important : watch you controls. The amount of solution and the amount of light must be the same for all plants   Only the amount of fertilizer can vary

 Measure the height of the corn every day and record
 Draw conclusions and report results
