Biology/Arctic Tundra Biome
Expert: Walter Hintz - 9/2/2005
QuestionHi, my name is Liandra Presser and I'm taking AP Biology this coming school year. We were assigned an project to complete before class started that requires us to research our favorite biome. I chose the Arctic Tundra. I was wondering if you had any Frequently Asked Questions about this particular biome, and if so what they are. If not (or even if you do), I have a few questions of my own:
- What is the normal weather in this biome (particularly the temperature and precipitation information)?
- What is the predator another animal should look out for most?
- Are there any necessary items a human should not go to this biome without?
- Are there any predators that would attack a human being?
Thank you very much in advance for you time and help.
Sincerely,
Liandra
AnswerHi Liandra;
I am a jungle person myself but tundra is also interesting and less complicated. I have been to every biome but tundra
I have been getting a lot of tundra questions lately. I jus answered one about endangered species on the tundra. I also get questions on environmental conditions and food webs.
To answer your questions:
1. The main predator is the polar bear
2. Obviously you would need warm clothing.
3. The polar bear could conceivably attack a human but it is highly unlikey. In the southern parts of the tundra in summer a grizzly bear could be found and they could be a danger if they have young nearby.
The tundra has become a political football due to global warming and oil drilling.
