Question Mitochondria and chloroplast were once thought to be free living , whats the name of that theory and evidence to support that theory
Answer Hi Shad;
The word you are searching for is Endosymbiosis. This idea was put forth by a great biologist named Lynn Margulis. The evidence for this concept is accepted today by cell biologists. One strong evidence is that the genetic material in mitochondria and chloroplasts differs from that in the cell nucleus.
Let me point out that mitochondia are considered to be descendents of bacteria not that they were once free living.
If you google Lynn Margulis you will find a wealth of information about endosymbiosis and some very unique ideas about natural selection.
