Question
Why are the functions of the energy pyramid important?

Answer
 Hi Robyn
I am not sure how to respond to this as the energy pyramid is a model and has no functon except to  pyramid show us the concept of energy flow and the importance of the Law of entropy  (second Law)  The 2nd Law tells us that with any change is a form of energy tehre is a loss of useful energy.
