Biology/Meiosis leads to variation

Question
Hi I have two questions that I'm finding difficult.
1. What do we mean by variation?
2. Why is variation within a species so important?
Thanks

Answer
With the exception of clones no two living things are exactly alike.  The things that are different are variations and the variations can be attributed to DNA.  During sexual reproduction chance enters into which variations are passed on.
Why do we all appear different? without variations we would all be alike.  How boring.  Worse yet a lethal gene would be perpetuated and we would become extinct.
