Question
why would an animal species which feeds on a varied diet have an advantage on one with a specialized diet

Answer
Dear Sam,

Now, I bet you could figure this out if you think about it for a minute.  :)

If an animal is able to eat only one particular type of food, then it could starve to death if that one food source becomes scarce or disappears.

A more generalized diet allows an animal to switch to a different type of food if one becomes scarce.

Hope that helps.
