Biology/Size of organisms

Question
Can you please explain why different kinds of living thing grow to different size ranges? For example there are small dogs and large dogs, and I suppose there are different sized elephants, but there must be some reason that a dog cannot grow as big as an elephant and conversely some reason why an adult elephant cannot be the size of a dog.

Size and growth is under control of the DNA. I realize that this is not much of an answer unless you understand DNA but that is another story. I can get into that if you wish. Lets just say that elephants are big because their parents were big.
