Question
Why can one find many species of dogs as compared to those of cats? Is that related to the domestication history of those two species?

Answer
 Hi Josh
If you are talking about domestic pets there is only a single species of dog (As familiaris) and cat(Felis catus) But there are many breeds. AS to dogs the AKC lists 150 breeds and the Westminster KC lists 162 breeds.
There only 30 to 40 breeds of domestic cats.  I suspect that is because dogs are more popular than cats
