Question
Hi

I'm wondering why the lower epidermis contains more stomata than the upper epidermis?

As well, I'm also wondering why different plants have different numbers of stomata?

Thanks,
Alex H.

Answer
It has to do with the structure of the leaf layers.  The spongy layer is located closer to the lower epiermis and permits greater gas exchange than the palisade layer.

The numbers of stomata depends upon the enviromental factors.  Plants that grow fast in a wet climate have more stomata.
