Question
When drawing blood, why is the needle always placed in veins?  And why in the direction blood is flowing back to the heart?

Answer
There are a couple of reasons that venous blood is drawn Wendy.  One is that the diagnostic tests that are needed can be done with venous blood and secondly the puncture of ateries is much more invasive due to the higher pressure on the artery.
Veins carry blood to the heart and not away from it.
