Biology - What signals a potato to sprout?

Expert: Barbara Silber - 2/5/2005

Question
Sometimes potatoes sprout in our basement.  Does it depend on darkness, warmth, moisture, hormones?  What is put on store-bought potatoes to prevent sprouting?  I am doing an experiment with potatoes all around my house to test these things but I need some reference information too.  Can you help or do you know a good website that's not too advanced?  thanks.

Answer
Dear Denzil,

I do not do school related assignments. I will say that all the suggestions you make of darkness, warmth, moisture and hormones probably play some role in the sprouting, but particularly temperature and hormones. For further information and to give you the important practice in doing research why don't you go to Google (www.google.com) and type in "potato sprouting causes","potato sprouting chemical prevention" etc. and see what you can find. Also, remember that there are many different kinds of potatoes; probably you should choose one type and stick to that kind for your research.

I hope that this helps you.
