Biology/species' extinction

Question
Why localized distribution and overspecialization can increase a species' probability of becoming extinct?

Answer
If a species is confined to a smaller area there is a narrowing of the gene pool making it more difficult to adapt to environmental changes. If a species becomes too specialized the options for survival decrease.  lets assume that an animal depends upon a certain plant for food and the plant dies out.  So does the animal.
