Question
in wat form is memory stored in nerve cells

Answer
Hi, Abhi. I got this passage from this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/528617.stm

"Neurobiologists call the process "Long-Term Potentiation" (LTP) when a nerve cell is stimulated by a neighbouring cell and acts as if it "remembers" the stimulation. It is this change that acts as the fundamental storage for memory information.  Synapses of a nerve cell that have been repeatedly stimulated by its neighbour undergoes a physical change. Its surface alters, forming a second contact point with other nerve cells about an hour after stimulation.

It is this change that forms the basis for the chemical and connection changes to the nerve cells that act as memory storage units."

Expertise

PhD student in Biological Sciences at Northwestern U. I can answer questions related to cell and molecular biology, especially those about the basic processes or techniques involved in the life of a cell. I can also answer questions about insulin receptors, since that is my area of expertise. I have a great interest in how scientific discoveries impact society so feel free to ask me about current "hot" science topics in the news and I will try to researcha and share with you the most relevant facts.

Experience

I am a graduating PhD student in Biological Sciences with experience in relaying science to people with non-science backgrounds.
