Question
Why is the half life of theophylline shorter in young children than adults?

Answer
Hi, Clare,

Thanks for your question.

Two main reasons:

1. The enzyme that clears theophylline (cytochrome P-450 1A2) is higher in children than in adults - it also increases in smokers.

2. Protein binding of theophylline in blood is lower in children than in adults - thus more free theophylline to be cleared.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Paul
