Question
QUESTION: hi! i'am going to take a biological science course this july,in international Islamic university in Malaysia.and,i have to choose between biotechnology or biomedical course, which both i interested in.however,i have doubt to take biotechnology because in Malaysia,i believe the field is new and still working hard to develop.as for biomedical, the prospect for the career isn't that big as in US and UK.would you please explain which of the two courses will benefit me more in the future.both courses take 4 years.

ANSWER: Hi, Izzah,

Both of these courses can lead to a whole range of careers - the biomedical and biotechnology fields are rapidly expanding at present and will continue to do so for some years to come - we are only just at the beginning of understanding in this area.
Overall, perhaps biotechnology is more limiting in scope for careers although how this will develop in future cannot be determined.
In summary, either of these courses would lead to a worthwhile and interesting career - you will probably have to travel (UK/US) for research training but that will only benefit you.

Hope this helps.

Paul

QUESTION: I've chose biomedical course and will be taking clinical and pharmaceutical specialization.i would like to know if i have a chance to be a pharmacist by only taking first degree in clinical and pharmaceutical.i also would like to know what profession i can be after finish my first degree in this field.

Answer
Hi, Izzah,

It is not clear what country you are in and, thus, I will answer as if you are in the UK.

No, you can't become a pharmacist with a biomedical sciences degree whatever the specialisations you have taken within the course. Pharmacy (in the UK) is a completely separate professional training.

To see what careers are available after a biomedical degree in the UK look at:

www.abpi.org.uk
www.bps.ac.uk (specifically Pharmacology)

You do not, of course, have to use your degree and can go into any profession that requires graduate entry (but with no subject specified).

Best wishes,

Paul
