Question
if some functions of your liver are not functioning properly what things should you avoid eating e.g should you avoid fish and chicken, any kind of fruit, nuts, vegetables?

Answer
Zahid,

Thanks for your question. A very complicated question unfortunately.

The liver performs so many functions and is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins from the diet - thus, a simple answer is not possible. It would depend on the type and extent of liver damage and would need to be clinically assessed by the appropriate specialist.

For instance, excess protein in the diet in patients with liver failure can lead to odd psychological disturbances thought to be due to excess ammonia in the blood (from the breakdown of proteins).

Sorry I can't be more specific on this one.

Best wishes,

Paul
