Question
My son was diagnosed with manic depression in early elementary school at the age of 6. He exhibited symtoms of more aggression and mania, very depression. However, our 18 yr old daughter was recently diagnosed as manic depressive after two suicide attemps this past summer, showing mostly signs of depression and little mania. Does this disorder present differently in boys vs girls?

Answer
Hi Tracey,

Although there are common elements in Bipolar Disorder, nevertheless different Bipolar people can present different symptoms.

As a Nutritional psychologist I am interested in treatment of Bipolar people with a combination of Nutritional Biochemistry and Psychotherapy.
This can be rather complex and I suggest that you familiarize yourself with books on Bipolar Disorder.

Books that come to  my mind are:

Werbach,M.R.(1991), NUTRITIONAL INFLUENCES ON MENTAL ILLNESS, A Sourcebook of Clinical Research, Third Line Pres, Inc.Tarzana. Cal.

I suggest that you ask the doctor to be referred to a Nutritional Doctor or a Clinical Nutritionist.
