Question
Dear Joyce, I am writing you out of desperation for my daughter. She has
been hospitalized twice and has taken several different meds  for ADHD and
bipolar. Her weight has gone from 72lbs. To 46lbs. To now a whopping
102lbs. in about a year and a half. She is now taking tegretol and tennex of
which neither is working. She stays in trouble at home and school. I am
scared for her. She is out of control. Please help.

Answer
Hi Molly:

First off, they need to treat just the bipolar disorder to start.  Any medication for ADHD will make the bipolar symptoms worse.  Talk with your daughter's doctor and ask about putting her on Lamictal--or a Lamictal/Seroquel combination.

This combination has been working wonders over the past couple of years for early onset bipolar disorder, as well as for those that other medications do not seem to help.

If she does not have an IEP a school, request one.  Send a request, in writing, for an evaluation.  She may need smaller classes set up for emotional support.

Lastly, ask the doctor about a parent support group.  This is a difficult situation and it often helps to have the support of other parents who also are going through this same thing.
