Question
My son is 10yrs. old and he has been diagnosed being bipolar, odd, and adhd. He is currently taking risperdal and dextroamphet. It seems to be working with his rages. But in the mornings he wakes up very cranky and starts cussing at me. He says I am yelling at him even though I haven't. I really believe that in his mind he see's things or situations that aren't in reality the way he sees them. I am going to talk to his Dr. and see about replacing the dext. with lithium. Do you think that might help? I'm at my wits end. All I want to do is help him. I love him so much.I have other children to and this is so hard. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Pam:

I would be more inclined to ask that the Risperdal be changed.  Many bipolar children are brought too low on this drug (into depression) and this can cause the negative behavior.  Discuss Lamictal with your doctor and see what his/her opinion is.

One of the most prevalent symptoms in bipolar children is having difficult mornings. I have no doubt your son really does feel you are yelling when you aren't.  Maybe giving him a bit more time to wake up in the mornings will help with that.
