Question
My adult daughter is at the 5th of 6th Lupron injections.  During  the course of treatment she has had a severe flare of her bipolar symptoms, worse than she has ever had in 8 years.  Is there some correlation with the decrease of testosterone and estrogen with the other hormonal imbalances associated with bipolar disorder and mood stabilizers?  At this point she is dysfunctional, unable to work etc.  There has been some speculation by her Psychs. that may be the cause.  How long does it take for the Lupron to become inactive in the system after the last injection?  She has been inpatient 3 times this month.  Has insurance, but is not being held long enough to see what effects the new meds have on her behavior.  She has this weekend had extrapyramidal reactions, syncope--thus we have taken her off of this pendng eval with her Dr.  She had been on seroquel for a short period for mood stabilization but keeps her so sedated she appears drunk.  Other meds are selexa, clonazepam,Limictal.  She is very intelligent, is an accountant for large company, fearful that her job and home etc are at risk.  Is there an estimate in how long it usually takes or can take to stabilize.  I feel hopeless.  She has had 3 inpatient admissions in one calendar month, not kept long enough to stabilize.  Any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Lafonda,

I am sorry but this seems to be outside my expertise. I believe Leuprorelin is drug used in cancer treatment and perhaps you can get some information at Wikipedia about any side effects.

As to general nutritional treatment I suggest that she goes on a hypoglycemic diet, which is an excellent anti-stress diet, psychologically and biologically. it will help stabilize her mood swings.
