Question
My spouse suffers for bipolar episodes regularly. we are never quite able to tell what type of manic episode they may be, some cause horrible anger, others are full of depression. we have tried to do what we know how but have come to a point where nothing seems to aid this. is there anything you can tell us to help what has been going on? she has already spent more than one night in the hospital and found short founded relief but nothing permanent. we. (the whole family) are at our wits end and aren't really sure if there is too much more we can do. i love her dearly and want to help as best as i can.
Thank you for your time and consideration

Answer
Hi James:

The first thing I need to ask is if your wife is on any medication.  While many people feel they can function without medication, bipolar epidsodes continue to get worse the longer they go untreated.  Modern medications do not have the side effects of earlier ones.

A second thing is regular weekly or bi-weekly talk therapy for both of you. An alternative would be to contact a local mental health agency and see if they have any type of family support group in the area.  This would help give you an idea of how others deal with their bipolar loved ones and you will also gain the support of those who understand--a major necessity.

I wish there were more I could tell you but these are the two most important things.  Bipolar disorder is the same as many physical disorders such as thyroid disease--it needs proper medication to help stabilize moods.  That is the first step.
