Bipolar Disorder/Bipolar Sister

Question
My sister is 31 years old and is bipolar.  Even with medication and therapy she is getting more out of control with every new day.  Currently, my mom manages my sister's disability money because she spends like crazy and doesn't save money for her rent, food, etc.  Unfortunately, because my mom manages her money, she verbally attacks my mom on almost a daily basis.  My mom is 54 and is exhausted and overwhelmed by the violent attacks.  We are desperately trying to find someone or a group who could manage my sister's monthly bills for a relatively low cost.  I need to get these finances managed by someone else besides my mom because my sister's words and actions are killing her.  Can you advise?

Answer
Hi C. Elliott:

Look in the phone book for a "base service" mental health unit.  They can direct you to the local mental health agency that may be able to provide a new payee for your sister.  This person would be responsible for keeping track of the money and making sure all was taken care of.  If there is no listing for a base service unit, contact any mental health organization in the area and they can direct you to the proper place.
