Question
I am 43 and have bipolar i w psychosis. i need to have a laproscopic hysterectomy but have been told it will throw my bipolar out of control. I am working on a masters degree and want to know what your opinion is i have had cervical cancer cells twice and procedures i constantly keep cycts and fibroids and pain.

Answer
Hi Nena . . .

Most of my patients who have had psychotic bipolar episodes have done well following surgery. I routinely start them on antipsychotic medication prior to surgery, if they are not taking such medication, or increase the dose by about 50%, if they are taking such medication.

Best regards . . .
