Question I am 20 years old and within the last two years i have noticed some changes in how i am behaving. I used to be easy going and now it seems that I get upset to the point of crying or yelling at my loved ones over nothing (a lost lighter or a dish that wasnt put by the sink after dinner). And other times I dont really react at all. My boyfriend of 3 years (living with for 2) and my brother have noticed these changes. My sister who i see 3 times a year have told me how i am acting. My mother was diagnosed as bipolar (and my maternal grandmother) and she killed herself in 2007. Should i see someone and possibly get treatment? I know those kinds of things run in families. Thank you for your time, Danielle
Answer Hi Danielle . . .
The change in mood you describe may or may not be related to your family history of mood disorders. There is no easy way for you to determine how serious those changes might be.
I think it would make sense for you to consult with a psychiatrist regarding the changes you, and your sister, have noticed in you. Only by taking a detailed history will it be possible for the psychiatrist to determine the significance of the changes you have noticed in how you handle situations.
Best regards . . .
Ivan
