I can answer part of your question, but don't have enough information to answer the second part. "Sick" could mean any number of things.
Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder that results from the neuro-transmitters in the brain being insufficient in the way they are produced. While there is no cure for bipolar disorder, medication can help regulate the chemicals and the person can lead a completely normal life.
